At just 5 1/2 weeks old, Wheeler began his medical journey. We took him to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a week-long full assessment, and started his participation in the natural history study taking place. Since then, Wheeler goes to NIH every six months for an assessment. Wheeler is also followed by the University of Rochester Batten Research Center as a participant in their study and visits there once a year for an assessment.
In addition to the studies, Wheeler has a full team of doctors that require quarterly or bi-annual appointments. His team includes his pediatrician, pediatric psychiatrist, pediatric sleep specialist, pediatric neurologist, ophthalmologist, and other as-needed medical experts.
Wheeler is actively engaged in therapies to help grow and expand his speech, fine motor, and behavioral skills. He sees his speech therapist and his occupational therapist weekly.
